DIY Natural Moisturizers
Nowadays, commercial moisturizers can be expensive, and they are often filled with a number of questionable chemicals and additives. Luckily, there are plenty of natural alternatives that you can make and use at home. Follow the directions in this article to learn how to make and use homemade moisturizers.
One Ingredient Moisturizers
There are many natural ingredients that can be used as a moisturizer on their own. Other things can be added to these ingredients to enhance them (which will be discussed later in the article). It is best to buy raw versions of these ingredients, or versions in which there are no additives, as this may affect the way that they are used. Below are some of the most popular single ingredient moisturizers.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera gel can be obtained in two basic ways. You can either buy bottled aloe vera gel or slice the leaves of an aloe vera plant to obtain fresh gel. Either way, this natural ingredient is sure to get the job done. Simply rub a handful of aloe vera wherever you have dry skin. Aloe vera gel also works to treat a number of other skin conditions, including itchy skin, rashes, allergic reactions, and bug bites and stings.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil seems to become more popular with each passing day, and it’s no wonder, as coconut oil is loaded with health benefits. The name “coconut oil” may be a bit misleading, as coconut oil is usually in a solid state, rather than a liquid state, like most other oils. Of course, you can melt this oil to make it a liquid once again. To get the most from this natural moisturizer, simply rub the oil on your skin after showering or before bed. This will help your skin to keep from getting dry and itchy.
Cocoa Butter
One ingredient which is similar to coconut oil is cocoa butter. When purchased, this will come in a solid state, much like a facial cream would. One bonus of this ingredient is that it will leave you smelling wonderful. While you will not smell like chocolate, you will still smell fragrant and clean. Use this butter as often as you need to combat dry skin. You can also use cocoa butter as a chapstick to treat cracked or dark lips.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is more or less an alternative for cocoa butter if you do not like it for some reason. This natural moisturizer works wonder to make more skin and hair less dry. Use this as either a lotion or hair conditioner to receive its wonderful benefits.
Petroleum Jelly
Petroleum jelly may not be your first go-to when it comes to single ingredient moisturizers, but it does the trick if you are out of your favorite lotion. You may feel slightly sticky after using this, depending on where you put it on your body. However, it not only helps to keep your skin from getting dry, but it also has additional medicinal benefits. You can use petroleum jelly to treat hangnails, as well as apply it to cuts and other abrasions to keep them from becoming infected. For these reasons, petroleum jelly is one of the best single ingredient moisturizers to use on cracked or cut skin.
Jojoba Oil
Unlike coconut oil, jojoba oil is usually in a liquid state when it is purchased. It is used as a carrier oil for many of the moisturizers later in this article. To use this natural moisturizer, simply rub it on your skin after you shower. Like cocoa butter, this oil will also leave you smelling nice, especially if you add in essential oils, like lavender oil.
