As part of your immune response, the mucous membranes in your throat become inflamed and swollen. This then leads to soreness which we all recognise as a sore throat.

If your sore throat lasts for a long time or doesn’t respond to any home remedies, it could be a sign of a more serious condition like tonsillitis. In this case, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
